HELP...I'm Making Bad Decisions

Bad DecisionsSo just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.Romans 5:21

Have you ever made a really bad decision? Or maybe it’s simply the struggle to make “a” decision. Maybe you’re afraid to make the wrong choice and so it’s hard for you to commit to making a decision and following through with it. Making decisions can be tricky at times, but there are some things you can do to help the decision-making process become easier.

First, you need to know that God wants to lead and guide His children into making good decisions. Whether it’s where to live, who to marry, who should be my friend, how I spend my leisure time or even what should be my priorities, God is interested in helping you make a good decision about that thing. So lean on His wisdom and include Him in the decision-making process. Romans 8:14 says, Those who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s children.”

Secondly, you need to spend time with God to really get to know Him and get His take on your decisions. The way you do that is to spend time in the Bible daily. I use the phrase “spend time,” because you need to do more than just read it. Spending time in God’s Word includes reading, meditating, memorizing and applying it. As you invest time in reading God’s Word to you, it will prompt you to pray asking God questions, praising Him for His attributes and blessings upon your life, as well as, telling Him your concerns. With all this in place when the time of decision comes, you’re ready to know and hear His voice.

One of my favorite experiences is to see an artist in a worship service slowly take his hand and make some swipes back and forth across a blank canvass leaving me to wonder what on earth it could be. At first it simply looks like a squiggly, perhaps a mistake, but eventually it becomes clear as the picture comes to it’s full development at the hands of the artist.

In a much greater way, God can do the same for you. Maybe you struggle with decisions because you’ve messed up. Maybe you have made a mistake and have done a wrong thing. Guess what? We serve the God of second chances. So you can come to Him and say, “Lord, I have really messed up. Can you help?”

His answer is yes. God will come and redeem the mistakes we have made.
Even Christians can wander away from the Lord. Even Christians can make bad decisions and do really bad things. We are effectively capable of doing anything, even as followers of Jesus, because we still have free wills and old natures. However, if you are a true Christian, even when you have blown it or gone astray, you always will come home again.

Hopefully you will learn from your mistakes. Hopefully you will not go and repeat them again. Hopefully you can fail forward, which means learning from your mistakes, determining to live a more godly life, and helping others not to fall in the same area.

The good news is that God can forgive you and give you a second chance. The Apostle Paul said in Philippians 1:6, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” So even if you have messed up, God still can turn it around.

Making better decisions always starts by putting God and His word first in your life. If you’ll choose to always put those things first in your life, you’ll find that you’ll be making better decisions and living with less regret. Choose today to commit to always put God and the Bible first in your life!
