The Illumination of Hope

Light of the worldJesus stood up and said to her,“Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said,“Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”  12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  John 8:10-12

Notice that the context for Jesus telling everyone He was the light of the world in v.12 was the encouraging word to this woman caught in the act of adultery in v.11 “Go, and from now on sin no more.”  At first this could simply be seen as a preachy scolding, but to put v.11 and v.12 together really does shed some light on the situation.  Jesus was saying, “You don’t have to live in darkness; you can be different.  You don’t have to continue living in the shame of your bad decisions.  You can be different, so go now, and sin no more.”

You might still be scratching your head wondering what could be any different for this woman because of this encounter with Jesus?  Well I believe Jesus answers that question in v.12 as He basically says, “When you’re following the light of the world (Me) you don’t have to worry about stumbling around in darkness of your bad decisions.

Notice how Jesus said in v.11, “Neither do I condemn you.”  It was at this moment that He went from being the light of the world to being the light of her world.  This stresses the importance of personalizing the message of grace and forgiveness that God makes available to all who will repent and believe.  The moment of change in your life takes place when Jesus is no longer just the light of the world, but He becomes the light of your world.  The reason this changes everything is because darkness never defeats light.

You might be thinking, “You don’t know how overwhelmed I am by the darkness of my past or the struggles of my present.”  Friend there is not enough darkness in the world to put out even the smallest flicker of a candle.  The good news is that when you believe this, it becomes personal for you, and when this becomes personal you experience freedom from the condemning voice of the world and the accuser of the brethren, Satan himself.

The next time Satan tries to tell you, “You can’t,” and “You won’t,” or “You never will,” meditate on the word of Jesus from our text, “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness again.”  Just remember that Jesus’ light can illuminate your darkness, His grace can forgive your sins, and His presence can bring healing to your shame.  This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”  (1 John 1:5-7)
